PERSONALISED MEDICINE: FROM RESEARCH TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Zaki Salleh is the founding and current director of Integrative Pharmacogenomics Institute (iPROMISE), in University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) dedicated to advanced pharmacogenomics research and precision medicine. He is also the founding president of the Malaysian Metabolomics Society (MyMs) which was established in 2011.

 

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Zaki started his academic career at the School of Medical Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1995 and became one of the founding members of the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) in USM. He then joined UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI) in 2004. In 2005, he joined Malaysian BioDiagnostics Research Sdn Bhd as the Technical and Business Development Director before joining the Faculty of Pharmacy, UiTM in 2007.

 

His notable contributions in science include the completion of the Malay Whole Genome Sequences in Malaysia, whole genome sequencing of several Malaysian Orang Asli sub-tribes, PCR based genotyping kits to identify patients with genetic polymorphisms CYPs, MDR1 and VKORC1 in precision medicine as well as research into potential biomarkers for cancers patients and responses to drugs using LCMS-QTOF technology. His research interests involve researches targeting on precision medicine using several platforms which include pharmacogenomics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and epigenetics.

SUPERCRITICAL FLUID TECHNOLOGY IN PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH

Professor Kenji Mishima is the current Head of Composite Material Research Center and a Department of Chemical Engineering, Fukuoka University and a professor in chemical engineering.

His primary research works and interests center on supercritical fluid technology. Through his various investigations, Prof. Kenji Mishima has successfully led various research commercialisation especially in the field of supercritical fluid, nanotechnology and microencapsulation to various field including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In addition, Prof. Kenji Mishima has served as technical consultant to chemical engineering projects and hold several research grants on environmentally benign production of materials using chemical processes.

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN COSMECEUTICALS

Associate Professor Pimporn Leelapornpisid is the current Head of Graduate Program in Cosmetic Science, Faculty of Pharmacy, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. With extensive research and training experience, she is an expert in research in development of pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals from natural medicinal plants products. Her research interests includes nanotechnology, cosmetic science, cosmetic delivery system and the potential of aromatherapy in cosmetic science.

 

Over the years, Assoc. Prof. Pimporn Leelapornpisid has published and presented countless research findings in numerous scientific conference, written books on cosmetics science and aromatherapy and has been appointed as reviewer by several scientific journals of pharmaceutical research.

RESEARCH IN DISASTER MEDICINE AND DISPLACED PERSON

Dr Susheela Balasundaram moved into the humanitarian sector as a volunteer doctor running mobile clinics for refugees in 2002 with a local NGO.  She then joined Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) in 2006, providing primary care services to refugees in Kuala Lumpur and also in detention centres.

 

Dr Susheela is currently the Associate Programme Officer in Health with UNHCR Malaysia. She has been involved in leading coordination and management of health programmes for refugees in Malaysia since 2007. This includes the following portfolios among many others: supervising health and HIV activities to promote inter-sectorial coordination; assist in ensuring implementation of Global Strategic Priorities (GSP) and UNHCR‟s Global Public Health Strategic Objectives in various planning operations; lead advocacy activities with relevant stakeholders in Ministry of Health to facilitate access to and provision of Health and SRH/HIV services for refugees in Malaysia; and liaise with the Ministry of Health to improve surveillance of infectious disease among refugees.

HERBALIST MEDICINE PHARMACISTS

Professor Agung Endro Nugroho, M.Sc., PhD, Apt is the current Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, Gadjah Mada University, a professor in pharmacology and a pharmacist by profession. He is active as chief researcher for Ministry of Health, Indonesia on initiatives for development and improvement of production capacity of traditional raw materials with multiple grants for research on isolation of active constituents of natural medicinal plants such as Ficus septica, Andrographis paniculata, Centella asiatica L. and their pharmacological properties as adjunctive cancer therapy and diabetes control.

Over the years, Prof. Agung has authored books on principles of drug action and pharmacology and well as making notable achievement in research. Recently, Prof. Agung has received the highest accolade when selected as prestigious lecturer at national level by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education.

 

PROF. DR. MD ZAIDUL ISLAM SARKER

SUPERCRITICAL FLUID EXTRACTION

Professor Dr. Md. Zaidul Islam Sarker joined as a Professor at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in April 2011. He is also a visiting professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia since 2015.

His specialisation is in food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sciences. He has an interest in developing nutritional foods through processing or isolation of natural products that can have pharmacological value.

 

He has expertise in supercritical fluid extraction, marine food products, food processing and food properties, bioactive compounds, fats and oils, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations and rheological properties with over 250 publications in ISI and Scopus indexed journals, few patents, book chapters, press released/news, and presentations (invited and keynotes speakers) at international conferences.

 

Prof. Zaidul established several techniques and developed methods in the area of supercritical fluid extraction which are worldwide recognised by the researchers and highlighted in newspapers and international magazine/press released. He was the winner of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Young Scientist Award at PACIFICHEM 2010 and is a winner of more than 20 medals including Gold and Silver Medals in exhibitions at the national and international levels.

SCIENTIFIC WRITING

Professor Sarinah Low Wah-Yun, PhD, is the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (www.aph.sagepub.com).  Prof Low is Professor of Psychology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. 

 

She was previously the Head, Research Management Centre at the Faculty of Medicine and also the Head of University of Malaya Research Ethics Committee (non-medical). She graduated with a BA (Hons) from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and subsequently obtained her MSc and PhD (Medical Psychology) from the University of Surrey, Guildford, England.  

 

Professor Low is actively engaged in teaching, research, service and consultancy.  She has published 20 books and book chapters and over 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, particularly in the areas of behavioral science, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, men’s health and aging.  She sits in a few editorial boards of journals, and has been a reviewer for many journals.  Currently, Prof. Low is also a co-author of the book entitled: Writing and Publishing a Public Health Research Paper, Kuala Lumpur: University of Malaya Press, 2009.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainol Akbar Zainal is the current Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Pharmacy, CUCMS. A registered pharmacist by profession, Dr. Zainol Akbar has brought his Canadian undergraduate training experiences in pharmacy to local academia setting since 2004. Having served several times as external examiner of pharmacy professional exam in University of Nizwa, Oman, Dr. Zainol Akbar has introduced and spearheaded the first pharmacy professional exam in the Malaysian pharmacy curriculum. His research and teaching interest lie in pharmacy education and he is also a member of the Malaysian Association of Education in Medical and Health Sciences. His other areas of specialty include pharmacotherapy in psychiatry and medicines management in the elderly elderly.

Dr. Izyan A. Wahab is the current head of the department of Hospital & Clinical Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy, CUCMS. She is a pharmacist by profession and has delved into academia since 2009. Dr. Izyan is an avid researcher with interest in pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance amd drug safety signal detections and serves on the editorial board of relevant journals. Her other interest also lies in  medicines management in the elderly. Having served as coordinator of numerous clinical pharmacy postgraduate courses, Dr. Izyan has garnered vast experience in bedside teaching and ward precepting practices.

Suraiya Abdul Rahman attached with Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS), as Head of Halal Science Center and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, teaching Pharmaceutical technology and Industry subjects. She is a registered Pharmacist by training and obtained her Master in Business Administration (MBA) Degree from the University of Wales in 2008. Prior to embarking into training and consulting activities and academic line, she was the Head of Drug Regulatory Affairs and member of Novartis Malaysia Top Management Executive Committee providing leadership roles to the company for 7 years. Consultant to a multinational company with regards to vaccine’s halal and fatwa matters. She is certified a Halal Trainer by JAKIM Halal Professional Board, Halal Internatinal Selangor (HIS) certified Halal Technical Competent Person and certified Profesional Halal Trainer by HDC. She is one of the technical committee members who to review and update MS2424:2012 the Pharmaceutical Halal Standards together with the Malaysian Standard Department and JAKIM. She has working experience in negotiations with JAKIM and syariah committee panel for a vaccine halal certification where she had accompanied personnel from JAKIM, Ministry of Health (MoH) and syariah panel for a pre-audit visit to vaccine plants. She has conducted halal related talks and trainings to local pharmaceutical companies and in HDC organized halal training programs.

Mr. Amrahi Buang graduated from University of Science, Malaysia (USM) in 1979 and served hospital pharmacy for the last 34 years. He was a Chief Pharmacist at University Malaya Medical Centre before he became the current President of Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS), the national professional body for pharmacists in Malaysia. He sits in many Board of Studies and curriculum review committees for universities in Malaysia for pharmacy graduate programmes, and contributed immensely in the field of hospital pharmacy practice in Malaysia by bringing it to a world class status. 

One of his major goals as MPS President is to help the profession in the implementation of the impending Dispensing Separation exercise in Malaysia for the sake of the patients and consumers.
